(Note: links will open in a new window.) Peace / Anti-War Groups Canadian Peace Alliance The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) is Canada's largest umbrella peace organization. Since its foundation in 1985 the organization has been helping member groups to act as a broad network, in order to provide a strong, coordinated voice for peace issues at the national level. Canadian Voice of Women for Peace Since its foundation in 1960, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace/ La Voix Canadiennes des Femmes pour la Paix has worked locally, nationally and internationally on issues related to peace, social justice, human rights and development, always seeking to promote a woman's and a feminist's perspective. Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) COAT is a national network of individuals and organizations in Canada that began in late 1988 to organize opposition to ARMX '89, which was the country's largest weapons bazaar. COAT has continued to expose and oppose Canada's role in the international arms trade, particularly where there is trade to governments which are engaged in war or which violate human rights. Since its formation, the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) has made significant contributions to Canada's peace movement. Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice MECAWI are a group of Peace and Human Rights activists representing various social/ political organizations and individuals from all walks of life. Our basis for unity resides in our shared vision of a new world, one in which Peace and Justice are guiding forces for change in human affairs and there is universal recognition and acceptance of a just and humane code of Human Rights. NOWAR-PAIX (Network to Oppose War And Racism) NOWAR/PAIX was formed by a group of concerned Ottawa-area residents in response to: The horrific events of September 11, 2001; The resulting declarations of war by the U.S. government and its military allies; The attack on civil liberties and the right to dissent; and, The ugly racist and xenophobic attacks on innocent people of colour across North America. Operation Objection As you read this, the Canadian military is embarking on its largest recruitment effort in at least 15 years. General Rick Hillier and the Canadian Armed Forces have launched a coordinated military recruitment campaign called Operation Connection to exponentially increase the number of recruiters throughout Canada. ACT for the Earth is launching a pan-Canadian counter-recruitment campaign - Operation Objection - in direct response to Canada's war in Afghanistan and this dramatic rise in military recruitment from coast to coast. StopWar.ca - Vancouver's Anti-war Coalition StopWar.ca, formerly the November 17th Peace Coalition, is a broad based coalition of over 180 organizations, businesses and individuals that have responded to international calls for days of action against the war, beginning November 17th, 2002. They are continuing to organize against the war on Iraq and for peace and justice in the Middle East. They see this work as including education, mass mobilization and lobbying. War Resisters Support Campaign The War Resisters Support Campaign is a broad-based coalition of community, faith, labour and other organizations and individuals that have come together to support U.S. soldiers seeking asylum in Canada because they refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq. Other Organizations that Promote Peace Amnesty International Canada Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of "ordinary" people who work together to achieve extraordinary results. Each day they stand in solidarity with - and help protect - individuals and communities around the world whose human rights are under attack. Amnesty members come from many different cultures and backgrounds. What unites them is their determination to build a world where all people live in dignity, security and freedom. Canada Haiti Action Network This website is a collaborative project of the Canada Haiti Action Network, a grassroots group of solidarity activists based in most provinces across Canada. They are united by a determination to raise awareness of what is actually happening in Haiti, and the real effects of the Government of Canada's support for the February 29, 2004 coup d'etat that overthrew Haiti's democratically-elected government. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is an independent, non-partisan research institute concerned with issues of social and economic justice. Founded in 1980, the CCPA is one of Canada’s leading progressive voices in public policy debates. Canadian Labour Congress The Canadian Labour Congress is the largest democratic and popular organization in Canada with over three million members. The Canadian Labour Congress brings together Canada's national and international unions, the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils. The Council of Canadians Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is Canada’s largest citizens’ organization, with members and chapters across the country. We work to protect Canadian independence by promoting progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, safe food, public health care, and other issues of social and economic concern to Canadians. Miscellaneous Resources Ceasefire.ca Ceasefire.ca is an initiative whose mission it is to provide people with Web-based tools to take political action and promote peace, disarmament and social justice. Ceasefire.ca is a project of the Polaris Institute. While the entries often focus on large and dramatic events there are so many smaller things done everyday to promote peace and justice. Peace Not War Created in 2002 to produce a fundraising anti-war CD for grass-root peace groups, Peace Not War has expanded to become a non-profit collective of autonomous artists, creatives, activists, promoters and techies.
